Geographical location

The commune of Jabłonna is located in the heart of Mazovia, within the Warsaw Lowland in the Vistula Basin, an area boasting an environmentally clean and favourable climate. Although the region lacks natural lakes, there are two important artificial reservoirs, notably the Zegrze Reservoir, located within the neighbouring communes.

In administrative terms, the commune of Jabłonna lies in the county of Legionowo in the Mazovian Province. The commune borders with the Białołęka district of Warsaw, the municipalities of Legionowo and Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki and the commune of Wieliszew. The Vistula River (Wisła) forms the southern border of the commune. The administrative centre of the commune, i.e. the village of Jabłonna, is situated along the National Road No 61 linking Warsaw with Augustów and further with Lithuania and Belarus. A considerable area of the commune, including a part of the village of Jabłonna and the villages of Rajszew, Skierdy, Suchocin, Boża Wola and Wólka Górska, is located by the Provincial Road No 630 linking Jabłonna with Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki. The rural commune of Jabłonna comprises ten villages: Jabłonna, Chotomów, Dąbrowa Chotomowska, Rajszew, Suchocin, Skierdy, Boża Wola, Trzciany, Janówek Drugi and Wólka Górska.

The commune of Jabłonna covers 64.55 sq km, i.e. approx. 0.2% of the Mazovian Province whose area exceeds 35,500 sq km and represents more than 11% of Poland. Forests and wooded areas account for 48.9% of the commune’s area (3,158 ha), whereas floodplains and water represent 5.96% of the area (385 ha). Similar to most regions in Poland, the climate of Mazovia is of a transitional type between a marine and a continental climate. As one moves to the east, the influence of the continental climate becomes stronger, which directly translates to lower temperatures in winter, higher annual temperature amplitudes and a shorter vegetation period. The mean precipitation is lower than the national average for Poland. A considerable part of the commune of Jabłonna (nearly 50% of its area) belongs to the Warsaw Area of Protected Landscape. The entire county of Legionowo features nine nature reserves, four of which are located within the commune of Jabłonna. A full-sized golf course in Rajszew, the only sports facility of this kind in Mazovia, is an example of putting the natural topography of the land to good use.

The commune of Jabłonna plays an important role in the environmental system in Legionowo county, and it features:

- four out of ten nature reserves located within the county, jointly covering 564.61 ha, i.e. 31.46% of the total area of all the reserves and 3.21% of the area of all nature reserves in the Mazovian Province;
- 85 out of 99 (i.e. 85.6%) monuments of nature are located within the county.
